Moab UTV Trails: Routes and Maps
Get to know Moab’s UTV trails before you choose a route. Understand the difference between slickrock driving and a canyon outing, find official maps, and decide where a guide fits your plans.
A trail name is only the start.
Moab UTV trails can mean steep sandstone, sandy sections, exposed ridges or a road winding into canyon country. Those differences shape the day more than the vehicle’s appearance. Pick the terrain you want to experience before looking at a rental or a guided departure.
Use this guide to orient yourself among Hell’s Revenge, Fins and Things and Hurrah Pass. Official route maps help with access and restrictions. They do not turn a demanding route into an easy drive, and a tour may use a different section or return than the full public trail.
Start with the terrain, then choose the trail
Hell’s Revenge is the choice for the classic slickrock experience: steep fins, ledges and exposed edges. Fins and Things is another sandstone route, with its own one-way layout. Neither should be treated as a casual beginner drive simply because guided UTV trips visit it.
Hurrah Pass shifts the focus toward Kane Creek canyon scenery and a pass overlook. The guided U-drive described here includes petroglyphs and stops along the canyon. Scenic does not mean flat or free of exposure, so choose it for its landscape rather than an assumption that any driver will find it easy.
Hell’s Revenge: slickrock with consequences
Grand County lists the public trail at about 6.5 miles with a difficulty rating of 6 and recommends it for experienced drivers. The trailhead is just beyond the Sand Flats entrance station. Use the county’s trail description and official map links when planning independent access.
For a guided U-drive, judge the operator’s experience and driver requirements separately from the public route rating. You still need to be comfortable controlling the vehicle over steep ground. Fins and Things: a different sandstone rhythm
Fins and Things is a one-way route of 9.4 miles, rated 5 by the county’s cited scale and recommended for experienced drivers. Do not confuse that full distance with a tour’s time on the trail. The official trail page provides the mileage log and map downloads.
Evening planning needs particular care: the section south of Sand Flats Road closes from half an hour before sunset until half an hour after sunrise. A guided sunset booking is not permission to drive every section after dark. Follow current access rules and the operator’s instructions.
Hurrah Pass: make the canyon the main event
The Hurrah Pass U-drive follows Kane Creek scenery toward the pass, with petroglyphs, natural springs and viewpoints described along the outing. It can suit a traveler whose priority is looking into the landscape rather than seeking the most technical slickrock features.
Allow the route to be its own experience. Do not assume that a Hurrah Pass booking includes Chicken Corners or optional cave exploration: those appear in a separate private scenic Jeep option. Check the named route and vehicle format together.
Use official maps before you go offline
Begin with the BLM Moab motorized travel map for the broader area. For Sand Flats, use the route-specific downloads and Avenza links on the county pages above. Save the relevant map before leaving reliable service.
Match the map to your vehicle and intended route. A general destination map is not a trail permission, and tire marks are not a reliable guide to legal access. Check current notices with the managing agency, stay on designated routes and do not substitute this overview for navigation.
Guided ride or independent driving?
On a guided U-drive, the operator provides the vehicle and leads the outing. You are still responsible for following instructions and controlling your UTV. Driver ages, passenger ages and vehicle arrangements vary, so check the actual booking rather than applying one operator’s rules to every ride.
Independent driving adds route-finding, access checks and vehicle preparation to that responsibility. Review Utah’s current OHV education guidance and permit requirements before riding. Ask the operator how the applicable preparation works for a guided booking.
